Sport is a confounding thing. That we go to such great lengths and expense to watch a select group of men (and sometimes women) overcome seemingly arbitrary and meaningless challenges is a fascinating and opulent pastime. Arenas housing sport are like contemporary cathedrals- pilgrimage places, utterly festooned and grand. Pursuing happiness amidst hard times is both necessary and ridiculous, and its fleeting nature seems to matter as little as the ultimate outcome. Rococo in every sense.
